Trypanosoma is a genus of kinetoplastid protozoa that causes sleeping sickness in humans. This disease is transmitted by the bite of an infected tsetse fly, which is prevalent in parts of Africa. The symptoms of sleeping sickness include fever, headaches, joint pains, and, in its progressed state, disturbances in sleep patterns, which is how the disease gets its name.Malaria, caused by Plasmodium species, is transmitted through the bites of infected Anopheles mosquitoes. Dysentery, typically associated with Entamoeba histolytica, results in severe diarrhea with blood. Polio is an entirely different disease caused by the poliovirus and is not related to protozoan infections.
